Stretching of Viscous Threads
Last modified: 2017-07-05
Abstract
We investigate the motion of slender axisymmetric highly viscous threads that are extended either by gravity or by an applied stretching force. Using matched asymptotic expansions, we obtain solutions for the full initial-boundary-value problem and show how inertia ultimately must become important. The solution allows us to understand the complicated mechanisms that underlie highly persistent filaments.
