Abstract

Inspired by nature, light weight cellular structures are efficient in energy absorption applications. Hierarchical micro/nano structures with extraordinary properties have paved the way for novel energy-absorption applications. While singly-ranked cellular foams and lattices have been widely used as filler materials of thin-walled and sandwiched structures for enhancing energy absorption and crashworthiness, they could reach their full capacity to a considerable extent, particularly with optimized designs for the given conditions. The important question here is: whether some hierarchical materials and structures could enhance lightweight and crashworthiness to a new level? With this motivation, the talk is focused on lightweight biomimetic hierarchical cellular structures for impact applications.
